Can't Replace Text when I highlight it

Whenever I highlight text and type to replace it, it instead puts what I
am typing before the text that I highlighted. This is kind of like
pushing the 'insert' button, but definitely different, and I cannot
find a way to fix the problem. Please HELP!

Check tools > options > edit > typing replaces selection (there is a similar
option in Word 2007).
