Can't rotate/bevel/shadow, etc. once you save as 2003 .doc

I set my default to save files in the earlier .doc format out of
consideration for othe users who might receive a Word document from me, just
so they don't have to download the plug-in to allow them to open the document
in the first place.
If I insert a picture in a new document, click Save, and then try to reopen
the document to edit the picture's effects, there is no option to do any of
the rotating/beveling/picture adjusting that there was before the save.

So, if you think you'll want to further edit pictures or insert and modify
others, you're stuck with a 2003 format menu. Just a heads-up about another
wonderful feature of the .docx world.

By your reference to beveling, I assume you're talking about the Smart Art
objects. Although these are converted to ordinary picture objects when you save
the document in Word 2003 format, that only means you can't edit the Smart Art
aspects _in Word 2003_.

If you reopen the document in Word 2007, and click the Convert item on the
Office button menu, the Smart Art will become fully editable again.

When you save the document, if you need to redistribute it, you'll need to use
Save As and force it back to 2003 format again.
