Can't run any office apps

R

R. Brian Lindahl

I've been running office beta2 TR for a while under vista x64 -
origially rc2, now rtm. I finally got around to upgrading to office 2007
rtm yesterday. the first install, from a burned CD, failed miserably -
something about certain files not found. FWIW, i've had this problem
with other office ISOs over the years - they just never seem to burn
right. a friend told me today that he had to burn it to a DVD even
though it was less than CD size... haven't tried that yet.

the failed install wasn't able to roll back for some reason, so i was
stuck with a partial install.

unpacked the ISO to my hard disk, ran setup, and it couldn't recover
from the previous broken install. so i manually deleted the office
folders and any office-related stuff i could find in the registry.

ran setup again, and it installed fine, AFAICT. however, on running any
of the office apps, i get the usual first-time install dialog, then it
tells me '<app> isnt' installed for the current user. please re-run
setup' or something similar.

if i set the app to run as admin, it runs fine. it still has problems
trying to open a document from explorer... it starts the initial setup,
then i get the escalation prompt, then the app opens without opening the
document.

the only clue from the event log is a warning:

Detection of product '{91120000-0011-0000-0000-0000000FF1CE}', feature
'ProductFiles' failed during request for component
'{C94DB6D9-15A8-4DE6-B10B-0C3DB1F025CB}'

this product ID appears to be the 'shared MUI'... which is the last
thing the setup progress says it's configuring before it tells me it's
not installed.

any ideas what i can do to fix this? i'm wondering if i deleted
something important during my registry purge.

TIA

Hi Brian,

What product did you use to create the CD? Nero, for example, seems to have problems with creating Office 2007 CDs.

Are all Office/Expression/Compatability listings in Add/Remove Programs in the Windows control panel removed?

Did you use the Office 2007 Setup.exe to install?
Did you complete the diagnostics (Alt,T,O,R) from Word 2007

hi, bob...
What product did you use to create the CD? Nero, for example, seems to have problems with creating Office 2007 CDs.

i don't remember the name... shareware. i reinstalled vista last night
and i can't find the app in my downloads. any suggestions on what i
_should_ use? and why is it only office CDs that give me problems?

i don't have nero; i used to use 'alcohol 120%' to burn my iso's, but
haven't looked to see if they have a vista/x64 version. like i said,
even this approach has had problems with office iso->cd in the past.
hopefully there will be a virtual drive software soon (alcohol or daemon
tools, maybe) that will run in vista/x64, and i can go back to
installing office and other apps from a virtual CD.
Are all Office/Expression/Compatability listings in Add/Remove Programs in the Windows control panel removed?

yes, i removed everything that looked even remotely office-related.
Did you use the Office 2007 Setup.exe to install?

yes... more than likely whatever came up during autoplay.
Did you complete the diagnostics (Alt,T,O,R) from Word 2007

yes... it didn't find anything.

like i said, i reinstalled vista last night, and the new office install
(from an unpacked iso) went smoothly and it works fine now.

thanx for the help...
