Cant run AUTOUPDATE behind my network

B

Bible John

I am at a university with lots of filtering and blocking. They block many
websites, FTP, direct access to Usenet, telnet, SSH, and much more.
Everything runs through Novell, and everyone's Internet activities are
monitored.

I try and run MS AUTO UPDATE but it does not work and I get no error
message. If I had a screen movie app I'd play you what happens, but I am not
familiar with any OSX screen movie apps. Maybe these were only in the OS 9
days.

What happens is it checks for an update, find the update (office 2005
11.5.0) and I click install and then nothing happens and I go back to the
check for updates screen.

Anyone know why?

I have to manually install these updates which defeats the purpose of this
AutoUpdate app.

A lot of people swear that manual updates are better than the ones
downloaded via an autoupdater...this is especially true for Apple updaters.
The Microsoft updaters are through AutoUpdate are supposed to be the same as
the ones you can download via the website.

Try this:

Go to the TCP/IP in System Preferences and enter these settings:
68.87.64.196
68.87.66.196
209.188.112.3
63.81.160.11

Click apply and go back to the Microsoft Mactopia download page and get the
update.

You've probably answered your own question. Just because the AutoUpdate
utility can "see" updates that doesn't mean can download them. Those are
most likely two different protocols.

Where I work I can't even get through our proxy to see updates at all.
But our Macs are managed anyway and updates are installed by the admins
and not Standard users.

Hope this helps!
