Can't save anywhere...!!!

Hi all:
First post here...

I believe my word may be at fault and in need of reinstalling but I
ask the experts here before I do that.

My Word 2004 for Mac opens from the dock, I can write a new doc but
when clicking to save as...beach ball goes round and round
forever...obviously I force quit.
I can't open some docs either...same thing happens the program
hangs...

Anyone care to venture an idea...???
