Can't save file in Word

Hello-

I am using Word 2000 and am having trouble saving a file or even
closing Word. When I try to save a file under "save" or "save as,"
nothing happens. This can be a simple file with just the word "TEST"
typed in it. Then, when I try to close Word, I am asked if I want to
save the file. Whether I say yes or cancel, I get the message "The
disk is full. Free some space on this drive, or save the document on
another drive." I have PLENTY of space on my hard drive, but even if
I drive to save it to another drive, I can't. Nothing happens.

Then, I give up and try to close Word and get the message "Changes
have been made that affect the global template, Normal.dot. Do you
want to save these changes?" If I say no I then it repeats the
message (eventually it lets me close). If I say yes, then I go back
to the original "Disk is full..." message.

I don't have any other applications open, I have cleared out my .tmp
files, my disk has been defragmented, and the document doesn't contain
any bad links (since all it says is "test").

Any ideas on what to try next?
