Can't save from XP pc to Win 98 pc

Jack

I'm on a small LAN (e.g., two PC's -- say Bravo, & Charlie) and something
unusual has started to happen which has never happened before --- I can't
save a Word file to a networked PC.

BTW, both PC's use MS Word 97. PC Bravo = Win 98SE, and PC Charlie = Win
XP.

I'm trying to save a MS Word document called "Jamie" from PC Charlie (Win
XP) to PC Bravo (Win 98 SE), specifically to a mapped drive (that is the C
drive of PC Bravo, but which shows up as Drive K on PC Charlie).

I am trying to save to a folder which is K:\Data\Word\General\

However, I get a MS Word pop-up window that says:
The folder 'K:\Data\Word\General\Jamie' isn't accessible. The folder may be
located on an unavailable volume or protected with a password.

NOTE: The C drive of PC Bravo is a shared drive, and has been that way for a
long time. So why is there a suddenly a difficulty saving to it?!
Apparently it's due to installing Windows XP update KB885250!! I'd
uninstall it but regarding the threat pertaining to the update, MS says,
"Maximum Severity Rating: Critical"

The problem exists only with all my MS Office 97 programs - Word, Excel,
Power Point, but not with graphics programs like PhotoImpact, or with
Notepad or Wordpad.

Word and Excel will save if I let it use the default file name that is
suggested!!
If I try to use the name I want, no cigar. Power Point doesn't offer a
default file name.

No problem saving to a local folder. In order to get it to save on PC
Bravo, I could not choose any name other than the default suggested. No
luck at all with PowerPoint.

Does anybody know of a fix for this situation (other than uninstalling the
security update)?

Jack,
You should post this q in a Windows group.
Refer here:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/expertzone/default.mspx
In the section:
Most active Windows XP Newsgroup Discussions, you will find a seach box. Try
here first since your question has probably already been asked. You should
get many hits that you could research. Also you should post your service pack
level for both versions of Windows. The more critical information you post
the more likely you are to get a specific answer.
Could have something to do with a recent security update to Windows XP.

This is a result of Windows XP hotfix KB885250. You can uninstall thi
hotfix using add/remove programs (you need 'show updates' checked)
Then to prevent it being re-installed by subsequent updates go t
www.windowsupdate.microsoft.com select "custom Install", when it find
that particular hotfix, tick "hide" so it won't download and instal
that hotfix again.

There is an MS article KB 895900 which offers another hotfix to correc
the problem although they advise to wait for the next XP service pack.

A work around in the meantime is when selecting 'save as' in offic
programs, first select a folder on the local disk, then change the fil
name as desired, then select the folder location on the mapped driv
where you really want to save the document. Amazingly this works !

Cheers
Kev
