Can't save new excel file

I just installed Excel 2008 on Macbook Pro with Leopard 10.5.1. When I try to save a new file I get the message... "excel cannot access the file "mac:backup windows xp:my documents:A20A5500" No problem saving a previously created file and no problem with new files in word and powerpoint.
