Can't save normal.dot - says disk full, even though it isn't.

Using Word 2003. Trying to save normal.dot. I get an error message
saying disk is full. Can't save it anywhere, even on an attached usb
hard drive with over 200gb free. Is there a setting in Word or
Windows preventing me from saving the file?

That's an erroneous catchall error message indicating that Windows/Word
doesn't know what is wrong.

What are you trying to do with normal.dot when you get the error? It isn't
normal practise to manually edit and save normal.dot.

I'm adding macros and userforms to normal. While I would prefer to
leave the macros and userforms associated with the loaded document
template, I'm using a client managment program called TimeMatters
which performs a merge to create the document from a template and then
allows you to run a macro after the merge. Since TimeMatters creates
a completely new document from the template, then unloads the
template, the macros aren't available unless they are stored in the
normal template. TimeMatters assumes the normal template in it's Run
Macro After Merge field and I do not believe there is any way to
change that or to keep the document template loaded after the merge
takes place. Thus, I have to add the macros and uerforms into
normal.dot.

What happens if you save all the macros to a new template (mymacros.dot) and
install it into the Word Start-up folder. The macros (and AutoText, etc.)
will be available globally to all. That keeps normal.dot slim and simple
(avoids corruption).
