Can't save Powerpoint 2004 Files in OS X 10.3.6

I recently came across a very annoying bug of PowerPoint 2004: once I
open a file, I can no longer save my changes - regardless of where this
file is located.

The only way I can save my work, is if I rename the file, which after a
while becomes painful.

Before opening a file, I always check that the permissions are properly
set ("read/write" for me).

Any and all ideas would be greatly appreciated.

By any chance were these files imported from and created on a PC?

You don't need to change the file name everytime, just use the save as
function and in the "Where" change the location of the save to a
"mirror folder" of the original folder the file was located in. You can
now save with the same file name. This should also allow you to open
and save changes from and to this new folder.
The reason I ask about the PC is that it is a very common issue.
