can't save using save as

When I try use save as to save a document in .doc format using Word in
Office Mac 2004, I get the following error message "Word cannot save this
document
due to a naming or permissions error on the destination volume."
There is no file with the same name in the directory and when I check
permissions I have read and write permission for the directory. Any
suggestions?

The last time somone posted with a problem like this, there *was* a
permissions error. Try saving somewhere else and see. Save to your own
local Documents folder, for example. m.

Thanks. I had already tried saving to other directories including my own
local documents directory that and it didn't work either. I did find a solution
though: shut down word and relaunch it.
