Can't save Word 2008 on Network Drive

E

eatsurf

Almost every time I save a document, or perform a "save as..." to make a new copy, I get the error message:

"You cannot save while the file is in use by another process. Try saving the file with a new name.
(Word Work File D_xxxxxxxxxx.tmp)"

I'm saving the files as ".docx" format. This similar behavior occured with the Word 2004 versioned files. The files are saved to a shared network hard drive, but file that are on my client (local) drive have the same results.

Anyone experience this behavior? Looking for a solution before I throw Word out the window with the bath water!

Thanks

Hi eatsurf :)

Please don't throw Word out the window with the bath water. The issue you
are experiencing sounds like a known one that we are working on. It happens
with AFP file shares on Leopard.

You can work around the issue by saving to a file with a different name or
by quitting and re-launching Word. This shouldn't happen if you are saving
to .doc format (although you will lose some of the new features available in
Office 2008).

Please let me know if you are encountering this problem under different
circumstances/configuration than what I've described.

Thanks for reporting this,

The only thing I found that works, and this was by accident, is if I am
connected to the network drive using two different computers, but the same
user, the problem goes away.

Here, I save docs to a 750 Gb network drive connected to my Airport Extreme
router. If I try to open and then save change to a doc on the drive in Word,
I get the error. However, if I connect to the drive with both my desktop Mac
and my laptop, no problems.

Without your software version information, this comment doesn't really have
much meaning.

If you are using Office 2008 on OS 10.5.1, they are working on a fix that
should be with us shortly.

Cheers

Not sure if this trend is still active, but we are having this issue too. I
have a few clients running Mac OS X 10.5.4 and office 12.1.1. They can NOT
open, edit and save .doc on the network. They can however open, edit and
save a .docx off the network. Any ideas?

Hi Dan:

This is almost certainly an "Access Control" issue.

OS 10.5 uses Access Control Lists to manage user privileges. The earlier
versions did not. The cleanest fix is to set up ACLs for your users.

There's a good discussion here:

John,
I have seen that document before and ran the command to get the user's uid.
The uid was not the standard 50x. She is logging into the mac via AD and I
believe her UID is the AD uid. Should I still try to change her UID?

Thanks,
Dan

I just discovered that the poster Dan was somehow linked to my
postings according to Microsoft Profile even though this is a
different Dan. I generally post in the windows 98 general discussion
newsgroup and the windows public security newsgroup and my name is
(e-mail address removed). It is a small world after all.
Hopefully, Microsoft will fix this mistake quickly but it certainly
amuses me. Take care Dan and I used Danster as my nickname here to
avoid possible confusion. Dan logging off --- <grin and bear it> I
am a PC user and like 98 Second Edition. I have only used Macs back
when they were old -- think Apple IIe and Apple IIc and of course to
try them out at the Apple Stores. I wonder if the confusion is on
your end as well? Please let me know after you check your profile and
posting list. Thank you.

Hi Dan PC!:

I have put that in to the webmaster: they should get that sorted eventually.
Yours is the first report we have had of that happening.

Cheers

Hi Dan (Mac!):

I have no idea what to suggest -- it seems there would be no harm in
changing the UID if it's only one user.

If you cannot get it sorted, post back and I will ask a proper System
Administrator for you.

Cheers
