Can't save Word Doc.

F

Floradee

I'm using Office 2000. When I create a document in word, or edit a document
and go to 'save as' it tells me I can't that it's read only. I know no one
else is in the document. How can I stop this! I either have to get out
without saving or rename the document and go back in, also this doesn't
happen with all documents.
What could be causing this?

Is the document stored on a local drive or network drive? If network
drive then do you encounter the same problem if the document is saved
on your local drive?

It seems to only be happening on the network. I'm the only one have this
problem right now.

Is your workstation set to AutoDisconnect?

Open "My Computer" and note the Network icon. It may display with an
"X". Typically if you select the network drive again then it
re-establishes the connection and many times this can go unnoticed.

If there is a delay and then when the file finally opens it opens as
Read only then it sounds like this is the problem.

Here's what may be happening:

If you are getting disconnected then Word is unable to create a temp
file called the "Owner file". This temp file is stored in the same
location as the document and holds the user info for the person that
has the document open. Since Word has no way of locking the file in
it's original location it uses "Read only" to protect the original
file.

Yes, I've noticed at times I do see an X marked off and I have to close out
to get back on the network. How do I correct this? The link you sent me goes
no where
Thanks!
