New MacBook, new Office 2004. From time to time, Word will not allow
me to save new documents. Also will not allow me to open certain older
docs except in Read Only format. I have repaired permissions. I am
the only one using this computer. Help!

Most Macheads think "Repair Permissions" is a magic spell that fixes
stuff. Its scope is really quite limited. All it does is compare and
correct the unix permissions of *program* files to the contents of the
"Bill of Materials" written by Apple's software installer for that
program.

If the program were not installed by Mac's installer then nothing
happens.

It has no effect on .doc files. It does give some people a warm feeling.

If you suspect the permissions on a Word document, do a get info on the
little pest in the finder. Down the bottom, you will see "Ownership and
Permissions" Click on the details triangle to see who owns it and what
access has been given to the owner, group and others.

Since you have a new machine, it is possible that it is confused about
your identity. OS X might be hiding different owner numbers behind your
name on the old and new machine, even if you spelt it right. The best
way to deal with it is to force ownership to your current self. You may
have to log into an administrator account to do so. You may even have
to resort to dastardy measures with terminal and the sudo command. If
so ask again, and I'll expand this answer after checking my facts. You
can do a lot of damage in terminal sudo, and I would not want to take
you there without due care.

Inability to save is similar. In that case, look at the ownership of
the folder into which you are attempting to write. You need write
access to the folder to write the name of the file in there. If you
ain't got it, the file won't get saved there.
