Can't Save Word Documents

I am a new MAC user, just purchased a G5 with Office 2004. Everything with
Office works great with the exception of trying to save a document in Word.
When attempting to save, I am prompted to run a combatibility check and
never get the option for saving. I have no problems with saving Excel or
PowerPoint documents.

The Save As dialog contains a Compatibility Check button, but you don't
have to press it. It also contains a Save button, so just press that. It
sounds to me like maybe you can't see the Save button because it's off
the bottom of your screen, or something like that.

Thanks for your response. Actually, I can see the save button, but it is
grayed out and not available for use. This is with the save function, not the
save as. I have tried this by running the compatibility check and it still does
not make the option of saving the document. Also, I have checked all of my
preferences in Word and have not changed anything from the defaults. This
is based on my PC/Windows knowledge, I am new to the MAC world and this
has been my only frustration in the transition process so far.

Matt,

Hey thanks again for the follow-up. I figured out the problem. I had set up
my default save directory to a folder that was imported over from a PC,
evidently, this caused a permissions issue. When I created a new folder on
the MAC, there was no problem and I am now able to save.

Also, Office 2004 was a separate purchase from the G5.

Thanks again!

I have never been able to use word since buying Office X, despite
repeatedly re-installing both system and office. I am not getting
anywhere with Microsoft. Having had to buy Appleworks, spent an
unnecessary mount of time trying with great determination to solve
this problem, and even buying a new computer much earlier than I
wanted to in case it was a software problem, I am now wanting to know
what other people in the same position have done. We have clearly
been sold a lemon. Anyone taken microsoft to court? I am reluctant to
buy the new version (2004) as if the last one didn't work why should
anything change?

If this is the level of detail you've given Microsoft as to the nature
of the problem ("I have never been able to use word"), it's not
surprising that Microsoft has not been able to help you. If you're going
to talk like that, no one can. m.

My guess is that there is about a million users of v.X who *can* save
their documents. Forget the lawsuit.

Instead work logically through the re-installation process. Office
writes a log as it installs. Would you like to compare your's to a good
'un?
Check the mvp's site for the step by step recipe for uninstalling and
re-installing.
Do all the other bits of Office save their work?
What happens when you try to save your Word doc?
Can you change your prefs and other settings, like style definitions.

Check your copy of the CD. Are the words "free trial" hidden under the
"fell off the back of a truck software shop, Mactusk Outer Slobbovia"
sticker?

OK OK I was only joking about the last bit. There are lots of us here
who will willilngly try to help.
