can't see audio note icons in notebook view

I was under the impression that after creating an audio note, an icon
would appear in the left margin of a page. I only see the icon when I
move the mouse over the area where the icon is supposed to be, but as
soon as I move the mouse away the icon disappears (unless it is
playing).

Is there a way to view the audio icons?

No, the audio note icons only display when the mouse is hovered over the
paragraph that has a link associated with it. This is by design to avoid to
much 'display noise' with Notebook Layout View.

This would seem to be a good place to set a preference. I rarely use the
note flag doohickeys, but I use recording all the time...

So display noise isn't an issue and a persistent audio note icon would
be very useful.

Agreed. It's exceedingly disconcerting to have sound files hiding in the
document and to be unable to find them.
