Can't see pictures

When I click on Insert -> Picture -> From File, and select a picture. and
then press Insert I expect to see the picture in my Word document. All of a
sudden the picture is inserted but I can't see it. If I click on File ->
Print Preview it's visible. Why .....? What could have caused the loss of
ability to display pictures? Is there a setting some where?

Tools > Options > View - uncheck 'picture placeholders'

Insert the picture and change the text wrapping style Behind Text. You may
also want to set the color to Washout.
