Can't see what prints in print layout mode

I have a document which includes a cover page, a table of contents, a footer
with page numbers etc. All the above listed items and several others I
cannot see in Print Layout Mode.

When in Print Layout mode this is all I see where the table of contents is
supposed to be:

{ TOC \o "1-3" \h \z \u }

For my page numbers this is what I see in Print Layout.

{ PAGE \* MERGEFORMAT }

References have a similar issues. My cover page is almost completly blank
although there should be a picture, a page border, a color shaded cell with
the Report Title etc.

Everything appears properly in the Full Screen Reader Mode and print
preview. It also prints properly. However, I can't edit my document
properly if I can't see how it's going to look.

The last time I had the document open everything was fine. In between then
and now I have work edon a completely different document. With that other
document I was comparing changes made to a revised dacoument with review tab.
I have no idea if something I did while working on this document caused the
issue when I reopened the one I am currently having trouble with.

Does anyone know what is going on and how I can get back to viewing what
will be printed in the print layout mode?

Press Alt+F9, which is the shortcut for going to Tools > Options > View and
toggling the Field Codes option.
