Can't seem to use 'Reference Document' field

I have Word 2003. I want to create a Table of Contents for multiple
documents, by creating a separate TOC document and using the Reference
Document field to refer to each of the separate documents I want to
include in the TOC.
So I tried to insert an RD field, by doing ctrl-F9 and, within the
brackets that Word gives you, typing RD "filename" - for example { RD
"Chapter 1.doc" }. I did the ctrl-F9 okay, and when trying to type the
stuff inside the brackets (i.e. RD "Chapter 1.doc") I can't get it to
stay typed. As soon as I try to type the R and the D beside each
other, the whole line (including the curly brackets) disappears.
I tried typing the filename then sliding in the RD in front, I tried
typing D and putting the R in front, I tried typing DD and putting the
R in front then removing (backspace or delete) one of the D's, I tried
typing RRD and then removing one of the R's.
In all cases, as soon as I have just RD (with or without the file name
included), the whole line (including the curly brackets) disappears.
Any ideas?
Thanks.

Okay, it's me again. I just realized if I change Show/Hide so I can
see paragraph tags etc, I can see the RD field correctly.
So nevermind!

I do find it very odd that Word behaves this way. XE and TC fields are also
Hidden, but when you insert them, Word automatically displays Hidden text so
you can see them.

But only if you use the dialog boxes to add the fields. When I'm pressing
Ctrl+F9 and typing the code, XE and TC behave like RD fields.

I realized belatedly that I would never notice because I keep all
nonprinting characters displayed all the time anyway!

I keep the nonprinting marks displayed too. I only hid them briefly for
testing purposes! :)
