can't send e-mail, "a connection failure has occurred" error message

Despite having read through all the related postings on this topic, I
can't seem to figure out how to solve my specific problem...

When I'm connected to the Internet on wireless networks other than the
one in my home, I often have the problem of being unable to send e-
mails. I can receive e-mail messages fine, but I am unable to send any
message, but instead get the error message: "a connection failure has
occurred" when, clearly, no such connection failure has occurred!

Verizon is my ISP and they have told me that they have many documented
cases of this type of problem with Entourage and have no idea how to
resolve it. I have SMTP authentication activated, which Verizon
requires. Again, this is not a problem on my home wireless network,
nor on about 1/2 of the ones I access when traveling. However, despite
the fact that I never change my account settings, I cannot send e-
mails on about half of the wireless networks I try to access.

I would be eternally grateful if anyone can help me sort out this
perplexing and, at times, maddeding phenomenon!

I am using Entourage from Office v. X on a Mac OS 10.3.9 system

Thanks,
Will

Hi Will!

I'm not a Verizon user but many ISPs do not allow sending email through
their servers unless you're sending from within their network. Foreign
networks, for example hotel networks, are often configured to intercept
your messages going to outside SMTP servers and will send them through
their own. That's probably why half your locations work and the other
half don't.

While Verizon may be telling you "that they have many documented cases
of this type of problem with Entourage" they may not be telling you that
this is actually a problem with all email clients. For someone working
in tech support, it's often easier to blame someone else if you're
stumped. Someone using Verizon may chime in and tell you they're working
without any problems. If so, maybe he can explain how he is configured
to send mail.

As a workaround, you can use your Mac's built-in SMTP server
capabilities. For setup information have a look at
<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/exchange/postfix.html>.

Hope this helps! bill
