can't send emails, only receive emails

Reto

Version: 2004
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Intel
Email Client: pop

I followed the account setup assistant and get the following message:
Please wait, this may take a few minutes...

Verifying incoming (POP3) mail account "gallati_reto" on "mail.gallati.ch":
Verification Succeeded.

Verifying outgoing (SMTP) mail account "gallati_reto" on "mail.gallati.ch":
Connecting securely to mail.gallati.ch
Verification Failed: "Entourage cannot connect to the server. Verify that your computer is connected to the network." (-3260 )

Some of your account settings are incorrect. Click the left arrow and verify the items highlighted in red. To complete setup without verifying your account settings, click the right arrow.

I receive the messages without any problems but it seems not to recognize that I have internet.

Any help is appreciated. Best, Reto

Well obviously the settings for your SMTP server are not correct.
Without proper settings, you simply cannot send e-mails,

A password and smtp setting are two different items. Have you logged into
your ISP with your web browser and checked to see what setting they require
for your account? Many have updated servers and you now need authentication.

BTW who is your provider? We have some of the more popular ones listed on
this page: <http://www.entourage.mvps.org/accounts/index.html>

Basics:

1. If you can receive but not send then you have a bad SMTP configuration
2. If you can send but not receive you have a bad POP or IMAP configuration

You can try re-entering info.
You can delete account and create a new one.
Using copy/paste can result in an extra space being added. Type carefully.
Check your Keychain for corruption.

I have entourage x and have set up joining my Gmail account to it
I've followed all the instructions i have found, and done (what
appears to be) all the right things.
Very useful http://www.entourage.mvps.org/accounts/gmail_pop.html
However for some reason i cannot send emails although i can receive
them perfectly. I understand that there must be a problem with my smtp
but i cannot for the life of me figure it out.
please HELP!

First, is this set up as POP or IMAP?

My Gmail POP account is set up using these settings:

Receiving under advanced ˆ This POP service requires a secure connection
(SSL)

SMTP settings: SMTP.gmail.com

Check these options under the advanced tab:
ˆ SMTP service requires secure connection (SSL)
ˆ Override default SMTP port 465
ˆ SMTP server requires authentication
Select Use same settings as receiving mail server

I would not expect IMAP vs. POP to make a difference for the SMTP settings.
I use Gmail as IMAP, and the settings Diane listed above work for my SMTP,
as I would expect.
