Can't send messages from Outlook 2007

I'm using Outlook 2007 in Vista. I can download e-mail messages from the ISP
(BT Yahoo) with no problems but when sending e-mail messages, I get an error
message:

Sending' reported error (0x8004210B) : 'The operation timed out waiting for
a response from the sending (SMTP) server. If you continue to receive this
message, contact your server administrator or Internet service provider
(ISP).'

I've spent over an hour on the phone to BT Yahoo helpdesk and established
that the Account settings in Outlook are correct. I also have the same
problem when trying to use Windows Mail instead of Outlook. I can send and
receive OK when logged on directly to the ISP over the internet.

Any ideas?

Well, if it is happening in Windows Mail too, then it isn't an Outlook issue
but something at the OS level.

If you go to Start - Run - telnet <address of smtp server> 25, what happens?

I'm assuming by 'when logged on directly to the ISP over the internet' you
mean the web based mail reader?

get message: "Windows cannot find telnet".

Yes, I can send and receive using the web based mail reader.

Well, first, I'm going to assume you replaced <address of smtp server> with
the address of the smtp server.
Second, that's really not the result I thought you'd get. I didn't even
think telnet was an optional component that you could avoid installing.
Makes things a little trickier.

Ok, you said you can download mail. Both your smtp and your pop server are
set to mail.btinternet.com, right?
Yes, I can send and receive using the web based mail reader.

Ok, well, that's a completely different protocol and will have nothing to do
with whether or not you can send messages from Outlook or Windows Mail.r

Any joy yet, I have same problem and once I have cracked it will post solution.

First issue, where has telnet gone in vista? It is hidden, go to control panel, programs and chose turn windows features on or off. You will see a lot of stuff to change here, one is enable telnet client. You then test port 25 as decribed before.

Have seen another posting saying port 25 doesn't respond in vista but does in xp? Will explore more.

Seems to be a common problem not only with BT mail and has appeared recently in Outlook 2007 too!

Have continued to dig, it appears that port 25 has been blocked by something (still looking) it may be a security update it may be a virus? It is not the firewall. A fix: go to the advance settings in you outlook account seetings (found under more settings) advanced and cahnge the smtp port to 587.

You will now be abkle to send email. This does not resolve the original problem, bbbut maybe ISPs have had enough of spam and are stopping port 25 (inbound in their case). Maybe Microsoft in their wisdom have blocked it but then again I cannot see any particular updates pertaining to this.

I will continue to hunt, hope you can now send email?

Well, thanks for that tip.

I suddenly had the exact same problems today and changing the port to 587
has cured it.

I seem to remember a similar problem when using an earlier version of
Outlook and (probably) when using XP; the same 'fix' worked then too.

Good old Microsoft ;)

I am having the same issue with sending e-mails (same error as mike51) and it
seemed to start with no changes to the system. The telnet told me that the
server was 'ready'. My account settings are correct and when i 'test account
settings' during setup i receive the test e-mail so i know something is being
sent from outlook 2007. I took this a step further and set up the same
account in outlook express and i could send and receive e-mail normally. I
tried changing the port setting as mentioned in this thread but i suspect
those are ISP specific and mine is not using that port number.

i have XP home with Outlook 2007 - any assitance would be great, if you need
more info let me know i have scoured the web and found nothing but this site
to give me a clue, at least i know now that i am not the only one....misery
loves company you know.

sent multiplecopies out of an email with an attachment. I am now unable to
send any messages and get the following" Sending error reported )x800ccc3c.
The server reported error. The server responded "precondition failed"

Any help would be appreciated.

What type of account? Since that's a server-side error, you'd be best
served by contacting the people who run the server.

I was also advised by BT Technical Support yesterday to change from port 25
to port 587 and it works (certainly in Vista, using Outlook2007 and Windows
Mail). They were rather vague about the reason but the said to change it
back in 24 hours time, implying that some kind of fix was forthcoming. It
still doesn't work on port 25 at the time of writing.
