Can't sendto/mailrecipient

I have a client with Windows XP SP2 and all patches up-to-date; also OFFICE
2000 Business edition with all service packs and patches up-to-date. When
trying to send a file by email from WORD or EXCEL using
file/sendto/mailrecipient command the system fails most [but not all] of the
time. OFFICE has been uninstalled and re-installed but the fault persists.
Would appreciate hearing from others having similar problems or suggesting
solutions.

when trying to snd to mail fecipient from WORD or EXCEL the following error
messge appears:
"MS OUTLOOK has encountered an eror either there is no default mail client
or the current client cannot fulfill the messaging request".

After pressing OK a second message appears
1. when sending out of WORD the second message reads:
"log on failed you must log on to your MC EXCHANGE to access your address
book
Error code --- unspecified error"
2. sending out of EXCEL the second message reads:
"General mail failure. Quit MS Excel, restart mail system"
Quitting EXCEL and OUTLOOK and trying again solves nothing.
