Can't spell-check in Word

D

Daiya Mitchell

Hi Sasha,

I suspect the proofing tools are loaded, but that Word does not know which
language the text is formatted in.
See which of the topics under #1 on this page fits your problem best:
http://word.mvps.org/mac/SpellCheck.html

The proofing tools would be in
Applications/Microsoft Office [version #]/Shared Applications/Proofing
Tools/

So you can look there first, if you like.

I have installed and reinstalled Office 2004 a number of times but
still can't get the proofing tools to load so I can spell-check my
documents in Word. My employer provided the Office CD so it is a
legitimate copy. Where do I find the proofing tools sooI can install
them?

Hi Daiya,
Thanks for your reply. I have checked and there ARE dictionaries in
the Proofing Tools folder and my language is set to English (US) - I
made it default again, just in case. I have tried to go to
Word>Preferences to select a dictionary but they are all ghosted out
when I navigate to them. I looked through the whole document link you
provided but can't find what to do next....? What else should I do or
where else should I go? The message I get in Compatibilty Report reads
"English (US) proofing tools are not installed"
Many Thanks in advance.

Select all your text first, go to Tools | Language, set it to English. Does
that work to make it spellcheck?

Making it default will only change documents created after that.

The preferences setting is irrelevant.
