can't stop an image from floating

hi
I am pasting images from PowerPoint into tables in Word 2003. In one
document these images have gone in as pictures with a setting of In Line with
text which is what I want. In another document they sometimes appear as
pictures and sometimes as drawings and even though the setting for both is In
Line with Text, they are floating on the screen and I can't seem to change
it.

I wonder if the problem could be something to do with the table or style,
though I can't see a difference. I think this because both documents were
based on an original document which had the same problem in a couple of
sections. I think the bad document must have been based on a bad section of
that document. Any ideas?

In your PowerPoint original do you have a "border" that surrounds all the
elements of your picture. I have found that I get this problem if the
PowerPoint original is made of scattered elements. Sometimes I place a white
box behind the elements, group all, copy and then paste into Word. More often
though I SaveAs the PowerPoint slide as either jpg or png and Insert Picture,
not using Paste function at all. The resulting image can be just as good as
the pasting option and this has several benefits, 1) the image tends not to
increase the Word file size as much as pasting in a slide, 2) the image is
consolidated to a raster image, so the receiver cannot easily edit the final
image (can be an important consideration), 3) Word has no problems with the
image, such as spurious floating.
Check in Tools, Options, Edit, Insert/Paste picture as: In line with text. I
believe this is default and from your description it probably is already.
I have not noticed this problem you descript being contributed to a
particluar style.
Hope this helps

Hi

I didn't know about the jpg option and will definitely use that in the
future. Thanks.

In this case the problem images are only part of a much larger document
which is near completion. If I start inserting the jpegs the images will be
different because the jpeg is the whole slide. If I can't fix the images I do
have another workaround but it will involved redoing it. As you can
appreciate I was hoping I could find a way to fix what I have done. Many
thanks for you information and time. It will make a big difference in the
future and I understand that 2007 doesn't have this problem so maybe I will
have to pursue upgrading soon too.
