Can't Telnet port 110 on mail server

We just set up a new Compaq desktop with Outlook 2003. I linked to an
existing .pst file and then set up an email account. I continually get errors
during send/receive. I've uninstalled all internet security and it hasn't
helped. I ended up trying to telnet my mail server and it wont connect on
port 110 or 25. Our internal router isn't discriminating against this one
machine.

I've uninstalled office and reinstalled twice...it didn't help. Although
during reinstallation outlook recognized and configured previous settings.

Any help on getting this machine to telnet port 110 on my mail server will
be much appreciated.

So I'm correct to understand that you are using a POP3 account and not
Exchange in your environment?
What are the exact errors you are getting?
Do you have a local firewall configured?

In telnet I'm getting the error: "Could not connect to host on port 110:
Connect failed"

In outlook I'm getting the messages:

" Server found, but there was no response. Please verify port and SSL
information is correct"

Pop3 & SMTP error messages: " Could not connect to incoming (& outgoing)
server. The problem could be the server name or port or the server may not
support SSL"

There isn't a local firewall configured on the machine, I've disabled it to
try and troubleshoot. The local network firewall (which supports 6 desktops)
is configured to allow port 110 and port 25 communication. I think the
problem is local to this machine because I'm able to take all the account
info (username, password, mail settings, ect) put it on a different machine
and it works fine.

This one seems to be a real "head scratcher"

it work when you logon as a different user on that machine and use the mail
credentials from the other user?

Thanks for your reply. I just created a new user account and tested
send/receive from two different email accounts and had the same errors as
before.
