Can't Turn Off Field Code Options

M

MargaretA

I cannot turn off field codes permanently by going to Tools/Options/View and
unchecking "Field Codes". After doing so, selecting a field code, and
pressing Alt+F9, I still get the field code.

This: Page 25 of { = { NUMPAGES } -11 }

should look like this: Page 25 of 25 (NUMPAGES is 36)

Please help. Thanks!

Alt+F9 toggles the "Field codes" setting in the Options dialog, so the
result you are getting is expected. You need to *either* change the Options
setting *or* press Alt+F9, not both.

If you get field codes displayed, whether or not you toggle the display, the
implication is that what you have are not fields but text. You must use
CTRL+F9 for the brackets {}

Suzanne,

Regardless of whether the Field Code setting is checked or unchecked, when I
press Alt+F9, the code remains. I'm sure I'm still doing something wrong,
but I can't figure out what it is.

My procedure has been this:

Go to View/Options/Field Codes
Uncheck "Field Codes"
Return to my section break
Highlight the field code.
Press Alt+F9.

Clearly I'm being a bit obtuse! Can you show me the error of my way?

Thanks

When you turn the field codes off in the Options dialog and then press
Alt+F9 in the document, you're turning the setting in the Options dialog
back on. But, as Graham says, if you're seeing { = { NUMPAGES } -11 }
instead of a number, then the likelihood is that you have text rather than
actual fields.

You must insert the field delimiters (the things that look like braces but
can't be entered from the keyboard) using Ctrl+F9. You can use the Insert
Number of Pages button on the Header and Footer toolbar to insert the {
NUMPAGES } field, but the = (formula) field must be inserted manually.

The wonderful tip of not using the keyboard to enter the { & } did the trick.
My day has been made! Thanks a lot!

Glad I could help. That's a common beginner error, and we usually do try to
make it clear, in proposing field constructions, that you use either Ctrl+F9
or the Insert | Field dialog (which handles such mechanics for you).
