cant type into dialog box

in Word 07 when I try to create a customized shortcut key
(Home/FormatParagrah command) in the Customize Keyboard dialog box, I am
unable to type anything at all. At first I could type Alt and a letter, but I
escaped by accident then came back into the dialog and now I cant type
anything in it. I switched documents, same thing. suggestions?
