can't "un-select" table of contents

Hi folks.
I'm using Win2KPro and Word2K.
Several days ago I created a large document, applied
several headings, and created a table of contents. Worked
great, especially the feature to click in the left margin
and press F9 to update the ToC, after making changes in
the document.

Tonight, I opened the doc again and made more changes,
then did the "left margin click, F9" thing. It updated
fine, but the ToC remains "selected" - in gray - and I
can't "un-select" it, even though I can click on an item
in the ToC and go to that page in the doc. The problem is
that any formating changes I make anywhere in the doc by
highlighting a section of text, the changes are made to
the ToC also.

I tried deleting the ToC and re-creating it - same
problem. I tried copying the rest of the document into
Clipboard, closing Word, then re-opening Word and pasting
that text into a brand new doc, and then creating a new
ToC - same problem again.

What am I doing wrong?

TIA,
tina

Hi Tina,

Are you saying that if you select some text in the main body of the document
and apply some formatting to it, such as Bold, that the whole of the table
of contents then has Bold formatting applied to it?

If not, the grey colouring of the table of contents can be turned off by
selecting Options from the Tools menu and then going to the view tab and
changing the Field Shading from Always, to When Selected or Never.

Please post any further questions or followup to the newsgroups for the
benefit of others who may be interested. Unsolicited questions forwarded

Hope this helps

As Doug implies, (a) the field shading is normal when you have that option
set to "Always" or "When selected," but it can be turned off, and (b) any
*direct* formatting applied to a heading in the document will be reflected
in the TOC (this doesn't apply to changes in the heading styles). Moreover,
the TOC styles themselves are set to update automatically, so any formatting
change you make to a TOC entry will be propagated to all the entries at that
level.

thanks, Suzanne and Doug. got the shading turned off. the
problem i thought i had with "other" text formatting being
applied to the ToC - that must have been something stupid
i was doing, because of course it's not happening now.
again, thanks so much!!
tina :)
