Can't uninstall/reinstall Office 2000 Premium

I have both Works Suite 2000 (installed first) and Office
2000 Premium loaded. They were installed on Win 98 but
when I upgraded to Windows XP Home (or shortly after) I
started getting error messages whenever I open Word or
any of the other Office apps. The Windows Installer is
asking me to load the install CD. If I do, it tells me
an error has occurred, run Setup and select "Repair".
When I try to run setup from the CD, Windows Installer
tells me "This patch package could not be opened...". I
have tried to uninstall both Works Suite and Office 2000
but that fails also with the same message. I saw article
810815 which seems like the problem I'm having but I
can't follow it because uninstall doesn't work. Also I
saw something about msicu/msizap but it said they are not
for Win XP. Any ideas how to get these apps uninstalled?

The Windows Installer Cleanup Utility (MSIZAP/MCICUU) has recently been
updated for Windows Installer 2.x, though all the documentation hasn't been
updated yet. See if this helps:
