Can't update normal.dot in Word 2003

J

Jim Helfer

I have installed Office 2003 my user, but am having a problem in
Word. I have it set to prompt to save the Default Template, but if I
make a cahnge that needs to be saved there (such as the font for the
standard style, I am not prompted to save to Normal.dot, and the changes
are not saved.

I do have "prompt to save Normal template" checked.

Hi Jim,

Normally, press the Shift key and then click the File menu > Save All, it should prompt you to save the changes to the normal.dot. If it
doesn't work for you, the normal.dot file on the computer may have been corrupted. We can delete it and then restart Word 2003 to
generate a new one. Following is the key steps.

1. Exit Word 2003.
2. Search for the Word global template Normal.dot file and rename it as normal.old. By default, it is on the folder: C:\Documents and
Settings\<UserName>\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates.
3. Start Word 2003. Exit it.
4. Start Word 2003. Click the Tools menu > Customize > drag one of the command button to the toolbar.
5. Restart Word 2003. Is the command button still on the toolbar?

If anything is unclear or if you have any other concerns, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Sincerely,

Emily Lin,
