Can't update Office 2000 pro

I

Iver Johnson

Some time ago I updated my operating sytem from Win ME to
Windows XP Home Edition upgrade version. I had Office
2000 previously installed under the Windows ME. After the
upgrade to Windows XP, I cannot upgrade or even unistall
the Office 200o. It says a Patch is not available. I
cannot even do a repair even with the original disk.

Can someone help me by telling me where to get this
missing patch? And how to use it?

Thanks

Hi Susan,

I used that 'cleaner' again and had to reinstall the office from scratch.
Anyway, the problem I reported initially is still valid. When I am trying
the SR-1a upgrade I am prompted with a message that the SR-1a is already
installed. I could not find any other indication (either through Word2K help
or other office component) for it. However, when I am trying higher SP
version (2 and 3) always prompted with a notice that "Microsoft Office 2000
Professional is not at the SR-1 Level".

Please help !!!!

Hi, Dudi,

Not sure I know the answer to your issue; the response below was for the
error "the patch package could not be opened".

I'm not familiar with Windows ME. Do you have any other 2000 version
application in the Office family? Such as Project, or Photodraw, or
something like that? What happens if you do a "repair" installation using
the Windows Control Panel? This should re-apply SR-1a automatically. This
article explains that:

254853 - OFF2000: "About <Program Name>" on Help Menu Does Not Show SR-1 Is
Installed:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;254853&Product=ofw2k

Is it possible that you're using the SP-2 administrative update instead of
the client version?

I think you have my problem. To quote from the Microsoft
knowledge database:

"Windows Installer patch files (.MSP files) from
previously applied Office updates are missing from the
\Windows\Installer hidden directory on your computer. MSP
files are stored on your computer after update
installation completes because they need to be referenced
for future update operations. If the files are missing you
will not be able to apply Office updates. You may also be
unable to uninstall Office products as a result of the
same problem."

In my case, I used system restore after reinstalling
Office 2000 CD1, which apparently doesn't remember
installation settings. Now I can't update or uninstall
CD1. No problems with CD2.

I don't have a solution yet (see posting Feb 13th).

Hello Susan,

I am using only the Office2K built in components. I tried also running the
repair option but the same results. I may found one clue. When I looked at
"How to Determine the Version of Your Office Program" at
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;255275, I learnt
that all of the installed components are all the "basic" version (version
9.0.2720). So, no chance I am using any higher or any variation of Office
upgrades.

Susan, what else could be checked by the SR-1 installer utility to confirm
the installed version ?

Hi, Dudi,

Not sure, but maybe you can try to remove the partially installed /
non-installed SR-1a using this article:

302751 - OFF2000: How to Uninstall Office 2000 Service Release SR-1/SR-1a
Update:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;302751&Product=ofw

Then re-install Office and its patches. It may be that, as Francis said
earlier in the thread, your patch information is partial--in that some files
were updated, but Office can't find the missing patch files.

Hi,

No progress :-(

I followed the exact steps in that article but the same results. I didn't
find any Officehotfix file but I found another report (see enclosed). With
this current update, I used a manual one (this is the reason for the
D:\DOWNLOADS\OFFICE2000\SP1A\TEMP\source.ini).

Any ideas ?

Hi, Dudi,

Your attachment may not have come through (and posting attachments to
newsgroups isn't strongly recommended, because of folks who are on dialup,
or because of the potential for spreading virusrs--not that a text file
would be a problem, either way). That said, this article might help you
figure out what's going on. It's long, but it may have some helpful steps
for you to follow to create a custom log and interpret it.

259420 - OFF2000: How to Use a Log File to Troubleshoot SR-1 Update
Problems:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;259420&Product=ofw2k

I suspect that the system restore is what got everything out of sync.
Rather than spending a gajillion hours trying to figure out what it did, it
might be worth a reconfiguration of your system (format and re-install
everything). Or...you might want to contact the manufacturer of your
equipment, if they pre-installed everything for you.

Hello Susan,

The file content I attached previously is:

Opening the patch source file, D:\DOWNLOADS\OFFICE2000\SP1A\TEMP\source.ini.

This version cannot be patched.

The following patches are applicable:
You already have Microsoft Office 2000 SR-1.

You don't need to run the patch!
-----------------------------------------------

The last line above says it all !!!! It looks like that the SR-1 is already
exist but this is the only indication for that. Each Office application
returns indication for the installed version (no SR1) when I checked the
"about" help option. Same is shown in the add/remove Office 2K professional.
My guess is that one of the office files returns incorrect indication to the
installer (9.0.2808 should be 90.2.2702 as far as I understand).

Please advise !!!
