Can't update Office 2000 with sp1

I had Office 2000 loaded on my computer...purchased an
Office XP Pro upgrade...everything alright until I ran
the scan for updates and it says I need to update Office
2000 with sp1. I tried doing that, but then my Office
products wouldn't open. Nothing, not Word, Excel or
Outlook. Did a re-install of Office 2000 and a re-
upgrade of Office XP Pro. Why is the scan for upgrades
still trying to upgrade Office 2000 when I now have
Office XP Pro? If I do need to upgrade Office 2000 with
sp1, why won't the products open after it is completed?

Similar problem...I installed XP and have updated XP,
however I am still prompted for updates for 2000...
Since I was a bit fearful that the older version updates
might overwrite something in the XP versions...I've just
left them alone. May be the wrong thing to do, but
everything works OK. Hopefully someone here can answer
this puzzling question.

I also have a similar problem. Have a legal copy of Office
2000 Pro installed for years and has always worked fine.
Tried to do an update and update would not complete. Was
looking for a file "data1.msi" and could not find it on
the disks. Now Excel won't open. Keeps looking for the
same file. Word and Access appear to be OK. Only thing I
can assume is that the update deleted some files in
preparation for replacing them and then got confused. Any
suggestions?
