Can't Update

K

Kurt Beckman

Recently I received several emails from Microsoft about
emergency patches and tried unsuccessfully to install
them.

Since them, when I scan for updates on MS Office Online I
get a page that says: "Error! Unable to check for updates
on this computer"

Previously I have successfully installed and upgraded
applications on this Windows 2000 Pro PC and have also
used MS Office Online to successfully update MS Office.

I have verified that I have administrative privileges on
this PC.

I have run detection on the Downloads home page a number
of times over several days from a clean boot with the same
result. The rest of my Internet access appears normal.

I don't know what to do about Windows Installer patch
files (.MSP files).

I don't know what version of Windows Installer I have.

Any suggestions?

If you tried to install updates from emails instead of
from the Microsoft web site, you installed a virus. See
http://www.microsoft.com/security/antivirus/swen.asp for
info on the latest one. That particular email is a great
look-alike, but Microsoft never mails updates. Go to the
McAfee site and download Stinger, which can remove the
swen virus from your machine. Then install any one of the
virus scan softwares and be sure to keep your dat files
current.
