Can't use mouse in Word

I'm having a problem in Word 2003. I can't use the mouse to highlight a word
or move the cursor in a document. Left and right clicks do not work. If I
move my mouse up to the tool bars the mouse works normally, but not in the
document. The mouse works every where else in Windows. Excel Works normally
just not Word. Worked Friday and then Monday morning does not work.

Things I have tried.

Ran Word 2003 Repair. No change.
Uninstalled Word 2003 and reinstalled Word XP. No change.
Recopied Normal.dot from a working machine. No Change.
Reinstalled Word 2003. No Change
Updated Mouse Drivers. No Change.
Got all windows and office updates. no change.
Logged in as a different user and everything works as it should.

Does anyone have any ideas?

If you start Word in Safe Mode, does that allow the mouse to work? Hold down
the OCntrol Key whist starting Word and it will open in its CLEAN install
mode bypassing all customisations and add-ins. What happens?

Yes that works the mouse works inside the document in safe mode.

Any ideas to troublshoot what the user did?

Can we establish that this is ANY documetn or just a document? If it is just
a documetn, then it is simply a case that the documetn has protection turned
on. IEther use Tools, Unprotect or open a blank documetn and use Insert,
Document: that will override the protection.

It's all documents, even new ones whether they are on the network or local to
the machine. A different user on the same machine has no problems, and no
other network user is having problems. You can type and move the cursor with
the keyboard, but you can't use the mouse to highlight or move the cursor. I
checked in the options to make sure click and type is enabled and it is. I
can't seem to find any other options that would cause this.

As a last resort, is there a way to completely uninstal word 2003 so I can
reinstall it clean. I uninstalled and reinstalled but it seemed to keep all
settings and did not fix the problem.

Thanks

Uninstalling Office is a complete waste of time. The THIRD PARTY add-in,
macro, template, COM or whatever it is screwing up Word will still be there.
If this works when another user logs in or when in Safe MOde, it proves that
WORD is OK. It is something outside Word causing the problem. Have you tried
deleting your profile and creating a new profile?

That is what I finally ended up doing. I made a new user profile and all is
fine. Sure is a weird issue though and I wish there had been another
solution, my users have lots of special settings in the apps they use which
are undone by a profile change.

Thanks for your help.

I agree: recreating a User Profile isn't a task to take lightly! But I have
encountered the strangest and most improbable illogical bugs before now and
it has been down to a corrupt profile.
