Can't use Office Update after Windows Installer Updated

Running Windows 98 and Office XP. Using Office Update I downloaded Office XP
SP3 while this was happening I was asked to update Windows Installer which I
did.
Now when I go back to Office Update to check on other downloads available it
gets halfway through then stops with an error message pointing to a problem
with Windows installer
