Cant use sum function or status bar

My auto sum will not work have followed help function and still no joy select
cell below and formula appears click auto sum twice and error message. Tried
to update status bar (right click for menue) none of my selections other than
count show.

Check whether the cells are in text format. (Right click>FormatCells). To
convert the cells to numerics do the below.
--Copy a blank cell
--Keeping the copy select the range of cells with numeric values
--Right click>PasteSpecial>
--Select 'Add' and click OK and check your status bar
