Can't view or play games sent in word 2003

A

Anna

At work, my colleagues sent an e-mail with a word file which contains a game,
but when I open word, all I see is a black shaded out box, where the
animation should be.
My other colleagues can see and play the game in Word, so either something
is disabled on my PC or I need to have something installed to open a Java
applet in Word.

My computer has Service Pack 2 installed.

Hi Ana:

Personally, I would breathe a sigh of relief if "a game someone sent me in a
Word document" turned into a black square.

How do you know that they didn't send you a virus? How do THEY know it
isn't a virus? Can they prove it? Most destructive software these days
will do "something" to entertain you while it is hurting you. Think about
it...

So it could be that the game is not operating for you because your antivirus
or anti malware software operated to protect you. Which could mean that the
people who sent it to you are in just about all the trouble there is...

Yes, you do need to have Java installed if the thing they have sent you is
in Java, but it may not be: it may be ActiveX. If it's ActiveX, it may be
disabled because the thing they have sent you has not been digitally signed,
and therefore cannot be "trusted".

Your question has appeared in the Macintosh Word group, where we have a
completely different (much safer!) operating environment. For that reason,
I won't even try to answer your question: the risk of creating a serious
security breach on your computer is extremely high.

How important to you is playing that game? One wrong move and some Internet
criminal could have all of your credit card details and your social security
number, and be selling them on the internet. Of they could get full access
to your company's network and get you fired. Yours would not be the first
company to be so badly damaged by this kind of thing that it has gone out of
business completely; getting everyone out of a job!

Is the game worth it taking that risk, to you?

If it is, then ask the Help Desk at work how to get that game working. If
it's safe, they will do it for you.

Cheers
