Can't view the cell entry as I type

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) First day using Excel on Mac. How do I display the cell contents at the top of the screen, like Excel on my PC? It seems the only way I can see what I am typing is by looking in the cell itself on the spreadsheet as opposed to having an easy to read display box at the top.

Thanks in advance for the help on such a basic question.

Have you tried selecting the Formula Bar from the View menu?
