Capitals and highlighted text

Help! I am typing along in a word document and I hit something that makes
everything be a reversal of capitals and lower case, plus if I move the
cursor, it highlights chunks of text. I don't know how to undo this. I have
to stop typing to let the computer eventually switch back to normal, and that
can take 15 or so minutes.
What can I do about this?

It sounds like your Shift key is getting stuck on. This can happen with the
IntelliType keyboard driver, as well as with a defective keyboard.

When this sort of thing happens to me, I find that if I tap the
Shift/Ctrl/Alt keys at the same time once or twice, it clears the Shift (or
whichever is stuck) state, and the keyboard works properly again.

In my case, I can eliminate the problem by dumping the IntelliType driver...
but there are features that I use that require it. On balance, I need those
features enough that I tolerate the quirky interruptions.
