How canI get rid of the automatic capitals at the beginning of a sentence?

Just Undo when it happens or use the AutoCorrect Options button indicated by
the flashing blue underscore that appears beneath the changed character.

For a more long-term solution use that same button (or Tools>
AutoCorrect...) to turn the feature off/on as you wish.
