Caption formatting changes on opening document

I have a long document of over 200 pages, with various levels and sections.
When I open the document the captions change to become minor headings, and
therefore the document map and ToC formatting is out of order and misleading.
I have tried finding information on formatting long documents etc, but to no
avail. Your help is appreciated. TIA.

In the Templates and Add-Ins dialog box, make sure to clear the
"Automatically update document styles" option. Does that make a difference?

Hi Stefan,

I had checked that and the option was clear. The caption style was resetting
automatically to Level 1. This happened for a few daya but the document seems
stable now.

If someone can help me understand the reseaon why this happened, I would
appreciate it. Otherwise I will add ti to my list of experiences.
