caption numbering changing

I am having a problem with MSWORD XP and the Figure caption numbering.
If I have a series of figures that are linked to Heading 6, I get the
correct number.

Figure 1.1.1.1.1.1-1, etc.

If I then have a caption linked to Heading 5 level, it will work but it
also changes all the previous caption numbers too to Level 5.

That's how it's supposed to work. I suppose the underlying assumption is
that we want our documents to be consistent. That is, we want all our
Figures to be numbered according to the same principle, and refer to (eg)
Heading 5 or Heading 6.

You can get around this consistency by using a cross-reference to a specific
heading using Insert > Reference > Cross Reference.

I have all the Figures linked to the paragraph preceding. For example:

1.1.1.1.1 System Overview
text text text
text text text
text text text


Figure 1.1.1.1.1-1 Figure title

1.1.1.1 Atmosphere
text text text
text text text
text text text


Figure 1.1.1.1-1 Figure title

and what is happening is when I put in the caption for Atmosphere
section which is linked to the Heading 4 level, it changes the System
Overview Figure number to a level 4 too.

Make sure that you use different caption labels for "System" and
"Atmosphere"; then you can set different numbering options for them.
You can create caption labels via the Caption dialog box.

Sorry, I misunderstood your description. "System overview" and
"Atmosphere" are clearly headings (at different levels). But, as I
wrote, what you need are two different (possibly even more) caption
labels, that reference different heading levels.

Alternatively, stay away from the Caption dialog box and create the
captions manually, for example as suggested by Cindy Meister.
