Caption style not accepted

H

hmm

I select a caption that is listed as "Header" in style menu, and try to apply
the "Caption" style using the menu. No matter how many times I try, it still
lists the Header style for that paragraph. Why is it doing this, and is
there something I can do to make the style menu list the Caption style?
Thanks.

Select the paragraph and press Ctrl+SpaceBar; this clears any direct
formatting, including character styles from text. Does that fix the issue?

No, Stefan, it still reads Header. I do notice, however, that when I press
Ctrl+SB it actually goes to Header style; then when I select Caption style,
the formatting changes to Caption, but the menu still reads Header.

Which version of Word? And where do you see "Header"? In the Styles
dropdown, in a task pane?

Word 2000.

"Header" is one of the styles in the Style menu, near the upper-left corner
of the screen. (So is "Caption".)

Try this: In Tools | AutoCorrect, AutoFormat As You Type tab, clear the
"Define styles based on your formatting" option. See also
http://word.mvps.org/faqs/formatting/TameAutoFormat.htm.

If the above doesn't make a difference, I'd treat the document as corrupt.
One fix is the following: Delete any section breaks, and then copy the
document except for the final paragraph mark (Ctrl+A, Shift+Left arrow,
Ctrl+C) and paste into a new document (Ctrl+V).

For more on document corruption, see
http://word.mvps.org/faqs/apperrors/corruptdoc.htm.
