Captions changing level

M

Matthew Hardy

Hi,

I'm having a problem with Word I don't understand. Recently I have
started viewing my document with the Document Map to enable easy
navigation of the document. However, whenever I open my document, not
only are my headings included in the Map, but also my captions! When I
view the document in Outline view, it shows me that my captions have all
been promoted to level 1. I of course immediately change them back to
Body Text, as they should be set. However, upon reloading the document,
the captions have once again been promoted to level 1.

I've checked my Styles and Formatting for the captions and can see no
reason why they are being promoted to level 1. The setting in the
Paragraph section is for Body Text.

If anyone has any idea why this is happening, I would most appreciate a
solution, as I find the Document Map extremely useful.

Thanks in advance,

Matthew Hardy

Document Map is notorious for promoting paragraphs that it thinks look like
headings. Are you inserting your captions using Insert | Caption (i.e.,
using the Caption style), or are they in a custom style?

I can only suggest that you avoid the use of DM, then. Would Outline view
help?
