captions & cross references

linda

I was recently upgraded from Word 97 to XP. Captions were
put in with a new style, called "exhibit". Now, following
the upgrade, when I go to insert another caption,
the "exhibit" style does not exist in the caption window.
Additionally, when I try to cross reference the captions
that are in the document from before, I am unable to chose
caption, or exhibit as a list of things to reference from.
Any suggestions?

Hi Linda

There are two different things going on here.

First, when you do Insert > Reference > Caption, Word will put the
paragraph into style Caption. You can then apply your style Exhibit for
your captions, if you choose. But this style issue is not causing the
cross-reference problem.

Second, find one of the caption numbers. Select it and do Shift-F9 to
expose the field codes. It probably says something like { SEQ xxxx \*
Arabic }. Note carefully what the xxxx is. Shift-F9 again to display the
results, not the field codes. Now, Insert > Reference > Caption. Click
New Label. Type your xxxx into the box. Click OK, then Close.

In the Insert > Reference > Cross-Reference dialog, in the Reference
Type box, your xxxx should now appear as a label. And you'll be able to
do cross-references to it.

For more info on this, and info about what's happening, see the

Hope this helps.
