Captions for floating objects

I'm using Word 2002. What I want to do is to insert a lot of Visio diagrams
and GIFs into my document and have them automatically placed at either the
top or bottom of the page near the object anchor. I also want the objects to
have automatically numbered captions that I can refer to using cross
references.

If insert things as inline objects the captioning thing works just like I
want it to. I can right click on the object, select caption, and add a new
figure caption. But of course the objects don't float.

If I convert my objects to use the square or top-and-bottom wrapping style,
and set the position to align to the top or bottom margin, the floating
object thing works just like I want. But now if I right click in the graphic
there is no option for captioning. I can go to the Insert > Reference >
Caption menu item, but the caption this creates is in a text box that isn't
tied to the graphic.

Is there any way to combine the two features that I want: floating graphics
and easy captions attached to the graphics?

It's not automatic, but you can get close: create a textbox that is
formatted as you need it, maybe with a SEQ field for automatic numbering.
Assign it to an autotext entry. Then create a macro that starts with a
selected graphic, inserts the textbox, positions it relative to the graphic,
and groups the graphic and textbox.
