Captions inserted should STAY with it's associated graphics.

I'm using word 2002 SP3

When inserting a caption, that caption should stay with its associated
graphic. I’m spending far too much time herding captions and graphics around.
Typically a picture or other graphic inserted into a document has a caption.
That caption belongs with the graphic and nothing else. There’s no reason for
it to wander off to different pages, have text jump between the graphic and
the caption etc. I’ve been doing battle with this feature for about 10 years
and have yet to come up with an adequate, reliable solution. What’s more, I
feel I shouldn’t have to. Insert > Reference > Caption: Figure 1, Figure,
Below selected item, done. Not I>R>C..., chase graphic/caption around
Ad-Nauseum.

Thank you for listening,

Dave

If you insert both graphic and caption inline, you can format the first
paragraph (graphic or caption) as "Keep with next." If you must wrap text
around them, put both graphic and caption together into a frame (use the
Insert Frame button on the Forms toolbar).

Suzanne,

Thanks for the info. I should apologies in that I did no reading on this
forum before posting. This message was posted via the comments link on the
office/word web site so I didn't actually know I was posting to an open forum
at the time I submitted my comment.

Fortunately, I was directed to the forum once my post was posted.
Subsequently, I have been through the posts on captions and followed your
suggestion in a previous post. I generated a "graphics" style that uses the
keep with next option and follows with a caption style. I've gone to
inserting the reference by clicking on the paragraph following the graphic
rather than the graphic itself, then using the insert reference function.
This seems to insert the caption as a text with no frame making it much
easier to manipulate.

This is the most acceptable work around I’ve found to date though it seems
less than optimal.

I’ve played with the frames in the past, I thought that you couldn’t
cross-reference caption imbedded in frames but I just tried it and I was
mistaken. Also, thanks for pointing out that the frames feature can be found
on the forms tool bar. It’s now added to my standard tool bar.

Thanks again for your help,

Dave

If your graphics are floating (wrapped), Word by default inserts the caption
in a text box, and Word indeed can't see text in text boxes, which is
probably what you were thinking of. When text boxes were introduced (or at
least highly touted) in Word 97, the idea seemed to be that they would
replace frames (although this quickly proved to be an unreasonable
expectation), and Frame was removed from the Insert menu. To add insult to
injury, if you wanted to put it back, you had to know the secret handshake:
although it was listed corrected under All Commands, in the Insert category
in Tools | Customize, it was listed as Horizontal! This was corrected in
subsequent versions, making it now easy to restore, but for most users who
don't have the command already available, it is handy to be able to point
them to the Forms toolbar.
