Captions renamed to Table

Hi
I have just updated fields on a 60 page document with a
large number of tables and figures to find that all the
"figure" captions have been renamed to "table"!

Can I prevent this from recurring?
Can I recover my original formatting? I've done a save
since.....

I'm using Word2000 with XP Pro, all fully patched.
