Captions

I'm using Word 2003, SP2, for manuals which include many tables, figures and
cross references. Suddenly, in a large document, either all the captions are
Tables or they are all Figures. I've tried reinserting them from the
beginning of the doc, for example, starting with Figures. When I insert a
caption for a table, all the Figure captions change to Tables.

Any ideas? Thanks

I've never heard of anything like this before. Therefore, my first thought is
that you have a macro (perhaps an Addin or a virus) that's doing this.

If you hold down the CTRL key when starting Word, to go into Safe Mode, you'll
get all the installation defaults with no global macros or add-ins. Create a
new document and insert some captions. Does Word behave as you'd expect it
ought, or do you still see the problem?

Distressed

I don't know if this is the problem, but worth a try:

when I was trying to create numbers for my equations, lemmas, definitions
and figures, I was using the caption insertion, but didn't tick 'don't
include label name'. Which meant that all my 'Figures' changed to
'Definitions when I accidentally tried to change the label. If you need the
numbering continuous across graphs and diagrams etc. I suggest you tick this
box and use the insert caption as the numbering part alone. Add in your
'figure' or table label manually?

I guess that doesn't help you for making the list of tables though?
